Hi all, my trusty old VS50 has developed some spindle noise. I think it is in the lower bearing (close to tool) but want to know if there are any bearings in the tool clamp on top of the spindle that I can check before sender her to scrap. The spindle still turns nice and smooth by hand.

You don't specify exactly what spindle you had. BT40, BT50, NC5. Speed 4500, 10000, 12000 Standard, 12000 High output, 20000 Etc... They made about 15 different spindles.

I attached some photos from the assembly book. I will assume it is BT40 12000. Coolant thru the knob. That was the most common at least in the USA.

There is a 'top' bearing that sits under the unclamp cylinder.
It is a roller bearing, not a ball bearing. See Photos.

Sorry, has the BT50 4500 rpm spindle, coolant comes down the side into a block mounted on the spindle nose to give high pressure coolant for insert drills. Does it also have a top bearing?

Here is the BT50 / 4500 drawings.
Same basic design. Different bearings of course.
