J&S 1400 cross slide accuracy

Hi Folks,

I’ve got a really decent Jones and Shipman 1400. It’s was refurbished a few years ago and up till recently ground to a tenth all over really well. But recently the cross slide axis has developed the dreaded taper.

I think this is an older version as the cross slide runs on ball bearings and replaceable Vee strips. But is not self lubricating. I’ve since added more lubrication to the slide but I reckon it will need an over haul.

Has anyone here every refurbed a cross slide on one of these machines? Like taken out the Vee strips and balls, ground the strips and replaced the bearings.

The spares manual doesn’t tell me what diameter the bearings are either or any accuracy class, which is a pain.

If anyone has attempted this before I’d like to hear you story. Or is this only the territory for a specialised company?

The balls are 5/8" diameter. I don't know what grade J&S used. On my 1976 machine as a quick bodge when setting it up (I'd bought it from work as scrap), I bought grade 10 loose balls from Simply Bearings, then turned the Vee strips over to use the unworn sides.

They shouldn't need regular lubrication, just a bloody good clean of the entire area and a light smear of grease on assembly.

Note that there is provision for jacking screws to take the weight off the balls. These should be used if the grinder is ever transported.

When I finally get around to rebuilding the grinder, I'll gat some gauge plate hardened, then grind the strips flat after scraping the X ways in.
 
Just an update and for any future machinists endeavours, I noticed that when I tweaked the clamping bolts, the Chuck was raising and shifting.

So I decided to pull the Chuck.

Underneath was rather clean. Some spots of heavy rust but mostly well ground surface. Probably 80% was in perfect condition.

Rather then grinding the whole lot as I’m pretty busy at the moment, I cleaned all the faces, stoned them lightly and reassembled.

It’s a Chuck of around 500 by 200mm, I used a smear of slideway oil underneath and torqued one side to 40ft/pound and the other to 30ft/pound.

Ground a test piece of 150 by 150mm. It ground to 0.002mm flat. Which is pretty decent in my book.

Should the taper return soon, I’ll investigate deeper.
