Hi all,

What lathe would you keep out of these 2? It seems that the Kart is much beefier than the Sophia.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks20220302_205330.jpg20220306_144340.jpg20220302_171813.jpg20220302_205336.jpg20220302_203407.jpg

Some more pictures.

The only drawback i see on the Kart so far is the smaller/lighter tailstock and also that the tailstock wheel has no graduations.

Also the coolant pump is missing.

The photo where ot shows no way wipers and what looks like badly scored ways, dont pick that one.

I think the photo you're referring to is of the Kart lathe - I was thinking the same thing about the ways.
I'd keep the Sophia - I just like it better - Nice beefy tailstock, for sure.

The ways on the Kart are just dirty, i will post up another picture. Also the graduations are finer on the kart.

From what i heard the Sophia is junk compared to the kart... i may be wrong!

I've never used or even seen either of these types of machines my self.
Here are a few things I might consider before sending one away .
So much depends on the work you hope to do with your machine.
If you have the option I would suggest you set both lathes up on a temporary basis and make some trial parts of the type of work you hope to make with both machines and compare how they perform. A trial may show up any issues with them as far as accuracy, ease of operation and overall condition are concerned.
From the pictures the Kart E2N looks to me like more of a tool room lathe with a possible gap bed and variable speed drive that don't appear to be on the Sophia.
The head on the Sophia at least from the outside looks like it might be a bit heavier for heavy stock removal if that is what you need.
Comparing spindle bore and tailstock taper size, and checking both machines to see if the threads you would like to cut most often are available without using change gears might be another consideration .
Having a heavy tailstock can be a plus if you are doing heavy turning and drilling large holes.
A larger spindle bore can come in handy too for some types of work .
On the other hand if you are making small parts and doing a lot of small drilling and tapping a heavy tail stock can wear on you at the end of the day if you have to slide it up and down many times per hour all day long unless it has spring loaded rollers or an air cushion under it.
Perhaps you would find away that would allow you to keep both machines and then you'd have the option of using the one that best suits the job at hand.
P.S. more info here if you haven't see it.

The big three considerations when choosing amongst older machines that CAN do the job you want to do are these:

1. Condition

2. Condition

3. Condition

There are other considerations, of course. Some of these are location, physical accessibility, price, and color.

When it comes to lathes, if all functional considerations are toss-ups (which practically never happens), and one of the contenders us seafoam green, I'd go for the green machine.

The one with the carriage hand wheel on the right (english style) may be annoying to use. Rather hard to choose one over the other based on a few photos. Condition, bed length, swing, spindle bore, chuck mount and size, hp, tailstock taper. The one appears to have a steady and follower rest. Are these in your shop? If so, which do you like to use?

Ive had the green one for a long time. Its okay but not many speeds compared to the kart, and also has a 1.8kw motor vs the 2.2kw on the kart. The kart weights 1600 lbs and green one 1150.

Slso the compound on the green one is in increments of 0.004 vs the 0.002 on the Kart.

The swing is 12.5 and 30" between centers on both machines.

I just got the kart started and cleaned, made leveling pads for it on my big Tuda lathe and hope to start using it soon(until figure our what oils is necessary).

So far i found a sticker "Tellus 41" on the cover of the variable speed gear box. But dont know what to use in spindle/headstock/feed box..
