i am looking for ideas as to how make carbide rifling buttons. how can we machine the grooves in the button?
Do any of you know where we can purchace pull buttons.
Thanks for the help

Assuming the source of Russky ebay buttons is cut for the forseeable future, then you must make your own .....grinding spiral grooves into a carbide rod isnt difficult, but you need a bit of equiptment to do it .....then ,the question.....what shape/geometry should the buttons be ?....Attaching a botton to a steel rod for pull through isnt difficult, but it seems the current practice is push through.

Time for a tool and cutter grinder?

Sent using Morse code on - .- .--. .- - .- .-.. -.-

Such a cutter is simple on a Star 5 axis grinder or the like but, not a piece of cake on anything other than a very good shape Tc grinder and a lot of experience...and likely buying a special diamond wheel.

The Star 5 axis can sometimes make accurate multiple grinds and so can do fussy grinds with standard wheels.

Haven't thought about DIY rifling buttons before. The first research would be if the groove and land form is merely inclined, or helical in accordance with the centerline, not the same thing.

id think the first bit of of the puzzle is what type of carbide is needed......incidentally,if you are rifling soft steel say (12L14) then HSS is OK ,maybe even a high carbon tool steel ...... you need suitable lube ...............and from what Ive seen ,diameter of the bore is critical to get the button evenly centred, but not stuck.

John, I'll disagree with you on 2 parts, the current practice isn't pushing the buttons or barrels made of 12L14.
