Currently at the Chow kit hotel in KL and there was short video on the hotel revamp. Brings back bad memories of industrial designers and the gobbledygook they speak.
We turn something on the lathe they lathe it.
We make something they craft it.
We machine materials into a shape they bring out the character.
We force the material to do what we want they let it speak.
We work together they collaborate.
We are grumpy they are sensitive artists.
Maybe if we all wear crocs have sleeve tattoos grow beards and talk like them we can charge more.
I was involved with the Australian version of "The apprentice". Apparently they told management we would get tons of work if we worked for free. There was an episode filmed in our workshop where they had to design a perfume bottle in conjunction with the designer's from a prestigious design firm. After the show aired we received a call from someone saying they had watched the episode in our workshop. They basically asked where the designer had got his tattoos done. Our one and only call.
Who else has to deal with strange practices and talk in a specific industry.
And a word of warning. If you ever get approached by a TV network. Money talks and bullshit walks. The only free advertising worth anything is contractually agreed ad space, preferably during a major sporting event.
