I have acquired an old Mitutoyo alc-7705w dro with glass scales to install on my Bridgeport. It all seems to work, just got done cleaning it all up and am ready to install it. My question is on reader head alignment. What amount of clearance should I have between the reader and the scale housing? Also, are there any calibration adjustments if needed once the system is installed, assuming proper installation? The scales are the type with the metal strip on the bottom instead of wipers. Thanks

That is probably a quadrature encoder and should not need any "calibration". On the clearance I would say as close as possible without rubbing hard although I have never paid that much attention to that criteria. I looked at one of mine and it only has a very thin strip of "wear tape" on the head. It looks like a strip of UHMW to me. It is paper thin.
