About 1mm / 40 thou left on the bottom. As you said: The bottom bulged when tapped to the bottom with a modified plug tap. I got about 7 and a quarter turns of the tap wrench. The top of the hole has a 45 deg chamfer with a total diameter of about 8.5mm so there is some loss there.
The designer said that defects on the back side wasn't a problem as long as there was no hole so...
There are so many bad designs in this job I can't get over it.
