Monarch 14C Spindle Install Problem

Hey, all. I pulled the spindle on this old thing; pretty straight forward thanks to another poster on this forum. I noticed the front taper bearing stayed in the headstock vs coming out with the spindle. It seems like it’s really in there; the spindle won’t reinstall with the bearing in the head stock. Also there were no screws in the oil shield on the outside of the headstock. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Alright, so after scratching my head a bit and scrounging around the basement, I make a slide hammer out of some 1/2-13 thread stock and a Bridgeport hold down. So now that I have it off, what’s the correct way to install it on the spindle? Thanks all!

My bad, this is an old 14C from 1941. I’ve almost got it back together, but the last 3/8 of an inch has me scratching my head.
 
I don’t know what I was doing exactly wrong, but after fiddling with it one last time, it went together just fine. Maybe the oil pump cam lever was causing the hang up?
