We have a 1930 Monarch NN lathe with a 48inch diameter chuck. We cut a new seal surface on this off road dump truck axle. Now we are locked in gear. I believe our clutch is the problem. When we got done turning the part we could not move the engage/disengage lever. It appears everytime the large plate came around it forced the clutch in until it bottomed out. I believe the last person to tighten the clutch set the set screw on top of the threads instead of into the slot. I got the adjuster backed all the way out and cleaned up the threads. I can not get the clutch to release. I am looking for any info on how this clutch works before I blindly begin tear down. Thank you for any help.20230217_083627.jpg20230425_080624.jpg20230425_154217.jpg

John, I'm always amazed at the amount of information you provide on these old lathes. You must have one heck of a library and organized so you can find stuff.
Thanks! That just happened to fall out of an old manual - I hurried back to read the other name on the "Dayton" clutch and there Edgemont was. To me the two names on the same piece of iron suggest that Dayton made these awhile after Edgemont gave up

I also did some research. The Edgemont company made the clutches. Dayton O is Dayton, Ohio where the company was located. The picture you have seems close to ours. Next time it is not in use I will tear back into it. Thanks.

Im case anyone else has this problem. Monarch model NN made in 1935. I took some pictures to hopefully help. Turns ot the problem was the bolt backed out of the plate and got bent by the spokes of the housing. We had to reattach the clutch liner and shim them out an 1/8 inch each. On the back side they had just tach welded the bolts onto the cast plate. It held a suprisingly long time. There were already small holes next to the bolt heads for some kind of keeper. We drilled them 1/4-20 and locktited bolts in with washers to keep the bolts from backing out. I also included a picture of all the internals out of the clutch housing. It is reassembled couple adjustments on clutch and is now working better than it has in a long time.
