My first guess would be some kind of accessory for a surface grinder. However, I don't see any way to mount a work holder so it's a mystery tool indeed.
Yes..It looks like a lathe cross slide that has not been finished..

There has to be something interesting on one of the sides not shown in the photos. In particular, there must be someplace to mount something onthe slide, but the photos show nothing. From just those views, it seems rather pointless.

Here is some more pictures...

The number stamped in the side is K5999...
The whole top rotates 360 degrees
The little pegs on top opens and looks to be oiling holes..

The whole thing has a solid precision machining feel to it..

What strikes me is the lack of mounting holes on the top..

Thanks for helping out..

Thanks for the extra photos. That is ... weird. Only thing I can think of is that something must mount to the ground areas on top of the slides, but I see no provision for clamping anything.

Is there any chance that something was secured inside the slide dovetails at the front end/nose of the slide?

Here is a look under the slide...I don't see anything..

Unless this is a part that is not finished, and then the customer drill his own holes...??

But then why is there so little room on the top to mount anything ??

2" of travel and a good protractor so it would be a great(overkill) wheel angle dresser if it had a diamond mounting device. Its really strange that it doesn't even have any bolt hole for mounting something.

I got it from an auction in Oconto Falls, WI from

S&M Machine

This is what was pictured on the site...

The holes on top looks to be just for lubrication..
Same with the other two...

I dont believe he said he was selling it. And I think he is literally wondering what the hell it is. LOL.
Hehe..Was not trying to sell it...Just trying to find out what it is...

And if it turns out to be some doohickey, brought over on the first boat, and is the foundation for the whole American machine industry..Worth billions...Then we can maybe talk about selling it..
