I have to make (or have made) a spline that meets an old Air Force / Navy spec from 1953. The spec was canceled in 1993, with no replacement... Thus, I can't imagine it's common...

Luckily, I have the dimensional details of the spline. But I'm not familiar with gear and spline manufacturing. Do I have enough info here that a specialist shop could make this?

Pitch Diam: 0.800000”
Base Diam: 0.692820”
Flat Root
Side Fit
16 Teeth
20/30 Pitch
Involute tooth form
30 degree pressure angle
Major Diam: 0.867” Max, 0.862” Min
Form Diam: 0.727”
Minor Diam: 0.717” Max, 0.707” Min

Thank you!
Jon

The only issue you may have is the current ANSI B92.1-1970 spec might require you to slightly reduce the OD of your external spline or slightly chamfer the outside edges of the teeth to clear your internal spline. In most cases, this is only an issue with less that 15 teeth. If this is just a repair job you should be fine cutting it to current 20/30 30 deg FR specs. Any gear shop should be able to cut this for you.

Perfect, thank you! This is a one-off job.

Jon,
Do you by chance remember what spec this was?

I am designing a shaft adapter with an external spline. I have the internal spline data that my external spline interfaces with, and it is very similar to the data you provided. I am hoping that the spec you used may have the information I need (I cannot find data on it anywhere.

Thanks for any/all help.

I have a number of odd cutters surplussed years ago from Fellows. Several have such spline proportions. I see no ref to a BS/SAE/ANSI designation. A few are marked P&W (Pratt & Whitney.) Suspect the spline is just another example of specials gear manufactures have to contend with. Welcome to tackle the job however you wish. But their is only 1 way a professional would proceed.
