Old Elgin lathe with slotted spindle

Hey guys/gals/theys/thems...

I have an ancient Elgin lathe.

The spindle nose has a "T" shaped slot, that I'm assuming, is for fitting a chuck onto.

Are these still available?
If so, is there a name for this kind of spindle nose?

Thanks much in advance.

I'll post pics later.

If the lathe spindle takes 5C collets, then a Hardinge 4 degree taper chuck mount will fit. They are available new from Hardinge and Pratt Burnerd (PBA) and are quite expensive. You can find used chucks to fit on eBay for a few hundred dollars or so, often rather worn and/or, if a 3-jaw, missing a set of jaws.

Hardinge made lathe spindles with that style taper in several sizes (3C, 4C, 5C, 6C and 7C), but the 5C size is the only one for which you can get a new chuck mount. Used chucks for the other sizes are very rare.
