PG&E utility in California just had their tesla mega battery catch on fire today in the town of Moss Landing. The fire department plans to watch for 36 hours and see what to do then.

Any new technology can have problems. True and should be expected.

But that is super dangerous. I mean we do KNOW that these batteries can have issues. So, perhaps more cautions really are needed.

OK, probably better that the battery was on top instead of UNDER the passengers. It looked spectacular, but any passengers probably had a chance to get out.

And finally, is the science really "settled" enough to justify taking risks like this? From it's very nature, science is never "settled". It is always open to further question and refinement.

Round Earth vs. Flat Earth.
Einstein vs. Newton.
Sun circles Earth vs. Earth circles Sun.
Aether vs. light speed is same in all inertial frames of reference.
Pasteur vs. virtually all of medical doctors.
The very existence of galaxies.
Evolution. This is still being debated. No, really!

Science is NEVER settled! NEVER! It always continue to advance but never reaches any end.

So how can we justify spending so much money and taking so many risks because, "the science is settled"?

The Tesla giant battery that was supposed to cure SA s power problems reportedly has one of the battery units burn every month......the units are spaced apart such as one fire doesnt spread............however ,it makes the battery storage strategy very expensive............ where politicians are involved ,expense is irrelevant......they need to be seen to be 'doing something".

It really is concerning how polarized we've become, with each new politician trying to push some more extreme variant of their brand of politics. We don't have centrists voted in any more, "center left" and "center right" keep drifting from each other.

On the EV side, we figured out how to contain a continuous series of explosions to such an extent that the average car owner see it as an appliance, I'm sure we can eventually make EVs make sense. It is appalling to see policies forcing it's use before it is ready. When EV's are genuinely better than combustion engine vehicles, people will want to buy them.

Certainly, for some they make sense. With all the tax incentives, artificially high gas prices, tighter and tighter restrictions on combustion engines, and upcoming ban of internal combustion engine sales in CA, they make sense for more people now than they ever have before. A whopping 5.6% of US new car sales in the last quarter were fully electric. That can hardly be viewed as wide-spread adoption. I'm totally on board with the idea that we will run out of oil and we need to find a suitable replacement, I'm just concerned we are trying to force a new technology on an unwilling populace before that technology is mature enough to sustain such a demand.

You might want to change your arguments to include facts occasionally.

And view EVwest's website. Bonneville racers, all electric, making a living converting Porsches so the owners can smoke ICE Porsches on the street. Reprogramming Tesla pieces, which they get absolutely no help with from the factory.

Grasping economics, physics, software and making a living. How much more practical can you get? Oh yeah, and having fun, too.

For most folks who live in a single family house, they are better. People do want to buy them. That's why cars like the Tesla Model Y have a 6 month wait list.

I noticed on a Volvo EV TV ad last night the statement that the car has "0 direct emissions". So we are supposed to disregard all the emissions from manufacturing the batteries, and generating the electricity?

But... the use of EV's can reduce pollution in cities or other areas where it's concentrated.

Or all of humanity making a mad rush to Mt Sinai to watch Jesus almost climb into the bed of a pickup truck via a fold down step-within-a-tailgate?

Well...first we see you are in Vermont, which is a state that leads in liberalism and uselessness. The push, dear, to stay with internal combustion IS organic; no external forces are at work. You mention 'facts' yet include none yourself. How...liberal...of you. In fact, all you've done is use the same argument I posed and turned it around - it doesn't work when turned around. Do you have an original thought in your head?

The wait for EVs proves absolutely nothing; there are waits for normal vehicles too. And, we see people waiting in line for all sorts of things - we can hardly use that as the go-by for determining what is smart. I've seen people wait for months just to see a Justin Bieber concert.

EVs are one more big step in government control. But the single biggest problem with EVs is they have zero soul. You could take Chuck Norris and put him in an EV and his sperm count would fall through the floor.
