Way back in the day, there used to be a really good car radio show on Sundays in LA. Not those idiots from Boston with the bad jokes-
These two guys had not only repaired cars, owned cars, raced cars, bought and sold em, and written about em for good magazines and newspapers.
Between em, they had owned dozens, and driven hundreds.
And they had some simple advice for the average used car buyer-
1- buy the latest model with the lowest miles you can afford.
2- ignore silly advice to buy "this model" or "that model". Every used car is different, and it doesnt matter how great it was new from the dealer- they all can get trashed.
Buy the cars that werent popular, or trendy, or nostalically featured in movies from when you were a kid- buy ugly ducklings like Hyundais or Buicks that no movie star or hot rodder in his right mind would consider. You find deals in the average, not in the cool.
I, personally, had some really good years with things like Ramblers, a Ford Taurus wagon I bought from a preacher, ugly average Hondas, an Escort, Mazdas- all low mileage, late model, and way underpriced compared to hip and popular stuff.
