Shipping charges .... Did they really go to insane levels ???

On the Mcmaster website, you can choose shipping options.

On the order menu on the right, click on delivery method. I've added
USPS to the list and have been using that for smaller items.

Huge difference in cost for smaller items, like drill bits, etc.

Outgoing, I use Pirateship. I have saved up to 50% on UPS and a
smaller amount with USPS. It allows you to compare rates and choose
the cheapest shipper.

And yet, somehow, you can buy small items from China and shipping is nearly zero.

Exactly! Because an old treaty with China before we bought much from them has all of the cost of shipping within the US paid by Our Post Office. CAn't understand why we are not renegotiating that treaty.
