Hey everyone. Reposting under the proper thread this time lol

We've been running this STAR SB-12R for a couple of months. The shop currenly runs 303 SS on it. Facing and OD turning is only done on the sub side using a boring bar. Wouldn't it make better sense to use a proper turning holder for back facing and turning? What are you guys using for sub spindle turning? We don't do any ID work on the sub. To add to to this, I can't get my chips to break when turning on the sub side unlike the main.

We currently use a Micro 100 quick change holder and boring bar on the sub side for facing and OD turning. That's what our STAR rep recommended and this is our shops first swiss so we went along with it.

Thank you!

I'm not surprised that you can't break chips turning with a Micro100 boring bar. What shank size is on your sub holders?

I have a 0.250" and a 0.1875" shank holders. My other 2 sub holders use ER 16 collets.

Just to throw another option out, this is what we typically use on our swiss machines:

Though the shank is much bigger than you've specified. Not sure if they make one that small. Utilis is a good option. They are represented by GenSwiss here in the US (Utilis just bought GenSwiss in October). If you give GenSwiss a call, they will find a solution for you. Very good team over there.
