TEMPORARY Hydraulic oil for Hardinge DSMA

I picked up this lathe a short while back and want to test it as cheaply as possible. I have a buddy who will lend me a length of the wire I need long enough to get to the machine but the hydraulic oil that Hardinge recommends is quite expensive. Would it be ok for me to use a cheaper oil for just a few minutes to check the operation of the machine before spending the money on the top dollar stuff?

Thanks for any input!

As long as it is of similar viscosity
I don't think it would hurt anything.
ISO46 is about middle of the range
and available many places.

I agree with Doozer. If you use something that's actually intended as hydraulic oil of the specified viscosity (as opposed to, say, brake fluid, coolant, or mineral spirits) you should not get into any trouble.
