As the tile says, what is this type of grinder and wheels made for. I have this and want to use it for its purpose. Im having a hard time sharpening drill bits as im not use to the angles and wearing the wheels unevenly.

Thanks

The tool rest looks like it was made for conventional wheels. The angle was made for some unknown reason to me. Big open space to get something trapped in there with harm coming to tools are fingers.

The grinder is usually called a carbide tool grinder because it is most often fitted with diamond wheels and used to sharpen carbide lathe tools. Baldor is still in business and makes a similar grinder. You can get plate-mounted cup wheels with aluminum oxide (for high speed steel) or silicon carbide (for rough grinding carbide) bonded to the steel plate. They are not for drill bits unless you know what you are doing.

Your wheels started out as straight cups and have been extremely worn to their present shape. Normally, only the flat face of the wheel is used for grinding, not the cylindrical surface.
