I have this 3-jaw DE Whiton chuck and it has a weird fitment.

It has a straight hole in the backplate with a 1/4" wide groove in it.

The bore is about 1.3" and it's about 0.8" deep.

What does this fit?

If the bore is on a 4 degree taper and there is a pin protruding into the groove, it is for a Hardinge lathe. Hardinge tapered spindle noses were made in several sizes, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The 5 is still made and the others are not. Whiton, Skinner and Union made chucks with Hardinge taper mounts many years ago.

There's no pin and there's no provision for one.
The ring closest to the end is about 10 thou larger in diameter than the one further in, but I can't tell if there's taper (the rings are very narrow).
