I bought a steel bar that is used for lifting weights (barbell) .It is over 7 feet long and 1 inch diameter the ends have a 2 inch sleeve where the weights slide on to and clamp .
I have seen video's of weight lifting and the bars will take hundreds of pounds on each end and flex when picked up and survive when dropped and come back to being straight . I was thinking of making a test bar for my South bend lathe . What kind of steel is this ?

Go buy you a piece of Thompson Case hard linear rod from McMaster-Carr and center drill each end for a test bar that you can put between centers to use. If you are brave enough, grind a taper shank on the end. But remember, unless you have dedicated grinding equipment capable of grinding to within a tenth or two, and a way to thermal stress relieve, you're going to be chasing your tail getting it straight and running dead true. But it makes a good learning project...
