Y axis problems

I have an old Maho600e that is having a few problems with the y axis. When moving a tight grinding noise occurs and the machine bombs out.
I have lubricated the machine loads but when using small increments it moves upwards makes a noise downwards seems ok. So I am assuming some sort of build up of something or a loose bearing maybe.
Has anyone any ideas of were the problem may lay.

I don't have a 600e but I would be taking apart that axis in full. Depending on what is the cause... you may want to look at other axis too.

I have taken most of the guards off and found out now that the noise is coming from the y axis motor itself

That is great news, all things considered. If the X and Y are the same model you may want to try swapping them if the bearings aren't obviously damaged or if the cause of the noise isn't obviously the servo you remove. The problem can be the drive as well.

Just need to work out which card to swap about to test it
