Belt Drive theory and basic knowledge ... for a practical example

The same thing applies to automotive gearing, differentials & transmissions. Called a hunting tooth design. That is why the ratios in diff. gears and transmissions are never an even ratio.

    Ongoing unrest in Russia

Sticking our nose into it didn't have much to do with ending the war in six months. The wheels started spinning the day Putin came into power. His goal(by his own admission) was to resurrect the USSR or something similar. Obviously after the war started our help gave them time.Had we not stepped...

    Ongoing unrest in Russia

I don't believe that. The US didn't force any of NATO to support Ukraine. Most of them are doing it on their own for their own good. Russia had a hard time in Afghanistan , trying to occupy Ukraine would be 100 times worse. I read an interesting article about Ukraine arms manufacturers . Some of...

    Split bearing housing repair

They make spherical cartridge bearings. You insert them in any round bore. Saves a lot of work trying to make a spherical housing.

Motor rpm vs weight and size

Same hp the higher rpm (3450) will have 1/2 the torque of the 1725 rpm motor. So it will be a 2 pole(3450) vs a 4 pole 1725. Hard to believe they would weigh the same. I suppose they could put more windings in the 3450 but that would change the torque and then it would no longer be the same hp.

    DoAll Vertical Band Saw Pusher

That's pretty neat. Good engineering is sometimes hard to spot because it is so simple. Mine has side ways adjustment which puzzles me.Most saws have a fixed blade position and use fences to position the work. I could easely adapt it to my saw though. Some where I have a DoAll parts book but...

OT: Hydraulic position / stroke control / end of stroke valves

Seems like you just need an adjustable pressure relief valve.Easy and adjustable for different jobs. You should have a relief valve for max safe pressure anyway. Forget about shims and stroke for control.Nothing simpler than a knob and gauge.

    DoAll Vertical Band Saw Pusher

Does it look like this? Don't remember where I got it but I thought it went to a VBS of some kind. I have a DoAll with a good jaw and most of the feed,no chain or cables. Just never got around to fixing it. I also have the fence assy.

OT: Hydraulic position / stroke control / end of stroke valves

I'm having a hard time figuring what you are trying to do. You say over squeezing? Once the squeezing starts unless it is some kind of deep draw mechanisim there is very little to no stroke change. In that case you would use a dump valve to relieve the over pressure. That is very easy with an...

OT: Hydraulic position / stroke control / end of stroke valves

Look for a manual poppet valve. There are screw in and stand alone types. Parker and Sun and just about any major mfg will have them.

OT ?: Building Liberty ships for the war effort, 1941

This reminded me , One of the sailors who was getting out of the Navy was a good customer. He bought a lot of speed equipment to build his car when he got home. The day he was leaving he dropped by the shop to show me his parting "gift" from the Navy. It was a stainless cannon he had made while...

OT ?: Building Liberty ships for the war effort, 1941

When I was in the auto parts business my store was about 15 miles from Mayport,Fl. So about 50% of my business was Navy . I was taking to a sailor one day and asked what his job was. When he told me he was a foundry man, You mean like metal casting? He was stationed aboard the USS Yosemite , a...

Belt Drive theory and basic knowledge ... for a practical example

Down load or get a Gates Polychain belt catalog. They will transmit a lot more power at a smaller belt than the regular timming belts. Their catalog has all the engineering info you will need.

tips for setting chevy head up on mill to cut guides?

Look up seat and valve guide machines. The head mounting fixtures are not to complicated. They need to be robust so don't skimp on material. There were fixtures made for BP's and clones for head work. Any competent machinist could make one. To go to the trouble making one for commercial work...

Starrett 811 Broken test indicator tip, threads broken off in swivel, no wire EDM, PLEASE HELP!!!

Just for any else reading, sharp picks are the first thing I try on sheared off screws as already mentioned. Once a screw is broken off then most times all the stretch or tension is relieved and the only thing holding things up is the top thread. A sharp auto center punch is the next thing to...

Z Axis Drive Motor for Bench type or small Mill

Nice set up But the Servo type hang from the shaft (no brackets just a shaft adapter, so no slop and include limit switches) The body mount (anti rotation)is easy to fab . Whenever I need something like that the first question is to buy or to build, so far it's been about 50/50. I try to buy...

    Chrome rod v. Steady rest

I would never use the steady to adjust the run out. Just starting dial the rod in close to the chuck and then adjust the steady at that same spot. Then move it to the other end.Otherwise use what ever means necessary to dial in the run out first ,then even if by hand get some kind of center in...

eBay Aloris CXA - Real or Counterfeit?

I think that seller is one who buys damaged , lost or somehow misplaced freight. We used to have a very good one here. Never knew what he would come up with. After hurricane Andrew in Miami he had trailer loads of stuff. He had a bin ,aprox3'x3'x4' full of lathe top jaws, new standard probably for...
