I learned "how to" by my dad who also watched the bubbles. He taught me to "once close, bump with the palm a little at a time" works good to sneak up on it.

How cheap do you want? Works even if you have no active phone contract so someone could maybe give you an old phone?

My “ levelling up “ days are over Bob. My knees just told me so. Especially in this cold weather we’re having in the UK.

I spent a big chunk of my working life “ levelling up “, or down as the case may be. My knees are now the proof of that. You get a feel for how much movement on the spanner/wrench you need to move the bubble one graduation. You also learn how much cast iron will move under adjustment.

My wife got me a foam mat for such jobs,makes getting up and down a lot easier. And now I have a long one for grovelling around under machines!

Can anyone suggest a low cost product with a video camera I could point at a level or two on a machine while I watch on a small screen down below the machine while turning the jacking bolts? Wired or wireless. Could send video to a smartphone or kindle. Simpler and lower cost the better.

They make really small HD video cameras for under $20. I believe they have an RCA video out. Really small and handy but you will need to wire it up and it depends on your monitor.
