  • Hi Jlegge. I have noticed you are the Monarch expert here, we are having an issue with a Model 40-NC and are hoping you could shed some light. Our headstock has had a major failure and Monarch is happy to sell us parts but not any books. I have noticed you said they only built a few 40-NCs so I can see why they may not have documentation for sale. Would model 90 or 91 drawings help?
Hello jlegge...I am new to the site and lathes. You appear to be an expert on Monarch lathes. What a fantastic experience to have worked there. I just picked up a model A. Would you mind sharing with me the manuals you have? Thank You in Advance.

Juniors were built after 1920, but I was told that Monarch rolled over their lot numbers at least once and being only three digits most like 4 or more times.

By the time they start using individual serial numbers in 1927, they had built over 10,000 lathes, so that means the lot number turned over 10 times.

Thank You jlegge. Greatly appreciate the information. I guess I'll just muddle through as they did in the early 1900's. My main concern was to not break a tooth in the gear system by inappropriately hitting a wrong lever at the wrong time. I'll spend some time with the lathe this weekend and let you know how it went.
jlegge, I really liked the post memorializing your Father. Stirred up a lot of old and good memories, Thank you again. I find it interesting you being in Rockford, I have just inherited a son of Rockford. It is a B.F. Barnes (1898-1907) 23" drillpress that was my Father inlaw's and I suspect his father's and maybe his Father's as well. They ran a sawmill years ago and had a small machine shop for upkeep.
I plan on doing a mild restoration, it is currently still working well, with just a little aging and a couple of ouches that I will fix. I will be covering it on the antique forum, mostly as a tribute to the man who owned and last used it. Lest we forget who we are and where our tools came from. Marsh
