Greetings to all
I have been approached by a client to find a new home for a
16 X 54 Hendey Tie bar lathe.
The Good:
The appearance is good, no broken castings, no radical mods,
appears to be complete, well-equipped; 15" 4-jaw chuck, 12" 3-jaw chuck with both sets of jaws, 15 1/2" faceplate, 9 1/2" dia. dog driving plate, 4 1/2" cap. steady rest, OFTP with assorted holders( left, right, straight, 1" boring bar holder c/w bar, parting-off holder.
The Bad;
Operator thinks there is some play in the spindle bearings
Belts need replacing, No drive to feed rod or lead screw, Motor is 2hp 550v 3-phase (doesn't matter much, it's believed to be burned out)
The machine is located in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Forklift is available for loading.
The owners would like to get CAN$2000.00 or near offer
I have photos to post as soon as I figure how to get them from my phone to my computer.

After about 3 hours of concentrated effort and a visit to The Apple Store,
I have totally failed to upload any pictures. What next?
On another tack, could Hendeyman shed any light on the history of this lathe?

Not to offer unsolicited advice, but $2000 for a tiebar with a burnt out motor, play in the spindle bearings, and no longer a drive to the leadscrew, sounds wildly optimistic... and that's as a tiebar owner myself, who really values them.
Just my $.02, I thought perhaps their expectations could do with a little management...
Also, a Hendey tiebar does not have a feed rod, just a leadscrew with keyway, which serves to drive both the powerfeeds or the split nut when engaged, for threading. The extra rod under the lead screw is the clutch rod for leadscrew fwd/neutral/reverse.
What is missing, that the leadscrew is not under power? Is it just a case of lack of operational knowledge, or some actual missing parts, or possibly worn clutch? Are the spindle bearings worn out, or just in need of adjustment? The answers will affect saleability quite profoundly.

As a datapoint on price, my 1921 14 x 8 ft tiebar in exceptional condition complete with steady rest, taper attachment, collet set in original box, collet "stantion", drip pan, 4 jaw scroll chuck, dog drive plate, face plate, countershaft, newer 2 hp motor and some tooling cost $500.

Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.
In my neck of the woods, Hendey is pretty
much an unknown quantity, in fact this may
well be the only one in Nova Scotia.
As always, these negotiations have to start
somewhere.
From talking to the operator(not a machinist,
I don't suspect that there is a problem with
the spindle bearings. He said they were worn
out because he occasionally experiences some
chatter. Unfortunately, the machine is not
under power, so it's a bit hard for me to
really give it a try.
I will be onsite one day next week, so I will
measure the vertical motion of the spindle with
a bar and a dial gauge .If I understand his
explanation, it seems that the input shaft to
the quick change gearbox may be broken.
Of course you are correct in your statement about
the lead screw/feed rod. I must have been more
than half asleep when I typed that.
As regards the price expectation, I/we are
completely open to offers. I recognize that
the most likely buyer will be at some distance
from here, and that will be factored into the
value. I am realistic enough to recognize that
when the travel is considered, any offers I
receive will likely be negative.
Doesn't look too promising for my commission.
I wouldn't be surprised to find that the ultimate
owner is me!
I'd be OK with that. I've had an eye on this
lathe for years, and I think it's a very worthy
project. Problem with that is I'm almost 75 YO,
and already have a good supply of projects. We'll see!

Has the super neat HENDEY drive to the rear cone. Involves a great design of swinging frame for countershaft (rear) cone and has both belt and gear reduction between motor and countershaft

Photo 2112 shows the little lever near left end of spindle that can take the drive to lead screw out of gear - a second system (along with lead screw reverse) that can "disable" the lead screw

Here is my old write up on lead screw reverse - starts at Post #17 in linked thread

Hendey lathe "emergency"!

New Price!!
Today I had a heart-to-heart with the owners to
point out some of the realities of the situation.
As a result, the asking price has been reduced to
CAN$1250.00 (about US$935.00). As usual, offers are
invited.
Also today, I had an opportunity to do some checking
on the spindle bearings. I don't see any issue at all.
With a dial indicator on top of the spindle nose, and
prying up on the spindle with a 4' long bar, I could
barely get .001" of movement.
