Wife and I spent last weekend celebrating our anniversary in Galveston. On the way out of town we went to the Galveston Naval Museum and toured USS Stewart, a WWII Escort Destroyer as well as the USS Cavalla, a Gato class submarine The destroyer was stripped pretty bare on the decks that were accessible, but there were the remnants of what I believe to have been a machine shop. On the other hand, the submarine was still pretty much as she sailed the seas, which was pretty impressive. I was really surprised when I went thru the bulkhead into the forward engine compartment, and there was a 10 inch Sheldon lathe mounted to a bench. The compound slide was missing, but other than that it seemed like you could power it up and run it right there. I wish I had snapped a couple of pictures, but I didn't think of it till I left. Might have to make another trip down there just for that.
