Came across this set on a clearance. The only markings is the patent stamp denoting German made between 1877 to 1945. Sockets are marked 8 to 36mm? It has a distinctive ratchet action I have not seen before. To date no one has any idea who, what, when or why this particular set was created. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely nearer your 1877 date. The entire thing says 100 or more years old, to me.

But, as it is German, I am not as sure. It would probably be 1920s at the latest if it were US made.

Super cool. Tapered square drive, just like wood auger bits. A shape any blacksmith could forge, measurement not necessary. I really like the extension and open ratchet. Had the set been marked snap-on, chances are the original purchaser would still be making payments.
