Can we get rid of 15 second timer on reporting spam?

So we all know the forums have been deluged with totally unrelated-to-machining spam, much of it in foreign languages, for the last couple of weeks. The spammers have obviously automated most of their process, creating multiple new accounts daily as yesterday's get banned by the overworked moderators. We've been asked to report even obvious spam, as the reports make the job easier for the moderators.
So why does the forum have a 15 second enforced delay on reporting spam? There were a couple of Korean language spammers that just popped up. I reported one, then had to twiddle my fingers waiting out the 15 delay before I could report the other. The freaking spammers can create new forum accounts faster than that, I bet!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the delay is not about reporting spam. Most likely there is a fifteen second delay between any sequential posts from the same user. That's an anti-spam tactic ... which does not seem to be working, but that's a different issue :D

I have not been bothering them over the deluge spam, because it's so obvious. The onesy-twosies still report tho, they can get missed easily.

With the deluge of Korean spam, I would not bother reporting those. We know. I pretty much just go to the latest post window and start murdering everything in Asian script, as do others.

If its sitting there, its not that no one reported, it more likely none of the handful mods are online. So a report on those is just adding clicks. I'd suggest reporting if a spam post is in an otherwise legit thread, but buried by other posts. Or if a spam post or new spam thread makes it past the first page of "latest posts".

Do keep reporting if its spam in English.

Someone was explaining how I get three tries at my bank account and its locked for 20 minutes, yet a hacker can attack a bank password with five trillion attempts in a few seconds ..........the explanation was 'its magic, dont you worry about that ' ......which is B/S .......why cant the bank freeze the account after 3 attempts?

1/6 of the year has disappeared and 15 sec seems like a long time . . .
but yeah, no need to wait unless you get malicious reporting.

I am getting something new: a pop-up window that wants me to agree to some kind or cookie policy.

I DO NOT agree to anything like that and if it continues to pop-up I will just stop coming here. Frankly, I don't want cookies of any type on my computer. They never "enhance" my experience.

Missing an OT tag... And I believe that EG is partly right. The delay also prevents accidental double posts when the Internet has a bit of a jam-up too. A ridiculous number of people feel like clicking the button twice (or more) will make a difference. I guess it's the equivalent of the old smack the side of the TV.

I thought that little tray that pops out the front of the computer tower was for my coffee and cookies:scratchchin:
The joke is long running, but I was a computer Tech at Packard Bell and NEC, and I had a couple old ladies that actually did think it was a drink holder.
I'm thinking the teasing joke, actually made it through to people who then thought it was true.
Loved the ole drink holder !

And the question, "you mean the box, or the TV".:wall:

What would really be good would be an AI program that determined similar posters and was set to notice annoying traits (like massive amounts of Chinese text, keywords like viagra, etc) and would kill things before we even open them.
But another "wisdom of the crowds" element would be the fraction of users who have read the post and rated it spam.
10 people rate it spam out of 15 people reading it? Or some such rule so that users can vote spam off the island. The post becames invisible to all users and is not indexed or searched. I would also set it up so that if the originator of a spam post logs in THEY SEE THE SPAM even though nobody else does. And they can write out posts and save them. And no one sees their posts, but they do! Drive em crazy, I say.

I belong to a forum that has a "jail" section. Those who can't play nice get banished to the jail forum for a length of time. They can only post in the jail forum, and they can't see replies to their posts, but can see all the other posts in other forums and can use PMs, downloads, etc. This keeps them from disrupting productive forums but is less harsh than total banning. I think it uses the same software as here. So what you propose should be doable.

I've never received a report for spam...I wonder who they go to?

Just a FYI for you guys that like to post that you reported in the spam thread be wary that accidents happen. I've accidently deleted someone because I hit the spam on the wrong post. Really, don't post in the thread, no one really cares it was reported and it increases the risk of you getting nuked... 😀
